I had the opportunity this week to participate in four of five Vacation Bible School classes for adults. Yes, all the kids were there and about eighteen of us adults met in a classroom and had our own lessons. We didn’t participate in crafts like the kids did but we did get to have our snacks at the end. I haven’t had so much Kool-Aid® in years.

You will not likely guess what the basis of our studies was. Each night, we watched a Mayberry (Andy Griffith) program. Yes, the old series where Andy Griffith played Andy Taylor the sheriff of Mayberry and Don Knotts the bumbling deputy. During all the years I’ve watched the series, from the originals through the syndicated reruns, I never before thought about there being any real Christian point to the plot. From Vacation Bible School I learned that there are many good points of Christian study. Study points of folly, gossip, discernment and peace were the four classes my wife and I attended. Each night we were able to break these points out and, using the show as well as scripture, learn how we can be better Christians.

I was privileged to be the leader for the night we studied discernment. That night we watched “The Great Filling Station Robbery” and talked about the fact that being a true Christian is not an easy task. We might have a simple relationship with Jesus but we have to work at being a Christian on a day to day basis. Not all of us have received the gift of the Spirit, discernment. Most Christians realize that having discernment requires us to do the following: we must constantly seek God’s will in our lives; engross ourselves in the Word of God; we must pray for discernment; and we must always avoid gossip. I’m still thinking about it and how I might improve. But then again I’m supposed to be, aren’t I.
